Professor Stanley Salmons, one of IFESS’s Founder Members, Publishes Short Stories For Children’s Charity

Professor Stanley Salmons, of the University of Liverpool, UK, will be well known to many of you for his work on the adaptive transformation of skeletal muscle by electrical stimulation and its various clinical applications. Perhaps some of you also know that he is a keen writer of fiction. He has launched this “second career” with a collection of short stories, the proceeds from which will support children in disaster zones.

Professor Salmons’ book – “Alexei’s Tree and other stories” - is a collection of 23 stories, featuring science fiction, fantasy, humour and crime. It is dedicated to the author’s late cousin, David Baum, who died of a heart attack at 59 while taking part in a charity cycle ride to raise money for children suffering in areas of war and disaster. Professor Baum was a tireless children’s advocate who played a major part in establishing the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Money raised from the book will be donated to the David Baum International Foundation, a charity that is training doctors to cope with the health needs of children in deprived areas of the world.

“Alexei’s Tree” refers to the first story in the collection - a haunting fairy tale about the death of a forester’s young son. The boy is buried with his favourite book, but an unusual tree begins to grow on the child’s grave. The tree will bring both consolation and further surprises as it reveals its secrets to the forester.

Professor Salmons says: “Short stories are a marvellous medium. Not everyone has the time to read a heavy-duty novel but you can read one of these before you go to bed! I try to write my stories like a miniature novel, with a satisfying ending but always with a twist. I think that the collection has something for everyone, from detective stories to science fiction and comedy, and should appeal to a wide readership.

“The title story is about a sick child and that made me think of David’s work. Children are so often the innocent victims of poverty and disasters, both natural and man-made. David worked with extraordinary energy to improve the health and welfare of children all over the world, including Brazil, Russia, the Balkans and Gaza.”

“Alexei’s Tree” is published by Troubador Publishing and may be ordered securely direct from the publishers at www.troubador.co.uk/shop.asp, price £7.99.
