Advances in Neurorehabilitation Conference
The occurrence of brain injury (such as stroke) and neurodegeneration increases
dramatically as people age. Such brain disorders typically result in profound
disruptions to an individual's ability to engage in the activities of daily
life. New understanding and technological advances are leading a revolution in
therapeutic approaches to repair and / or minimize disability and maximize
function and well-being following brain injury.
The conference will explore the physiologic principles that underpin these new
therapies. Researchers and clinicians will highlight state-of-the-art
rehabilitation techniques and novel therapies focused on optimizing physical and
cognitive abilities. The conference will also focus on new technologies to
better assess changes in brain function and human behavior. Many presentations
will emphasize the translation of new understanding into clinical practice.

The organization committee of IFESS 2004 would like to invite you to the first
IFESS meeting to be held in the United Kingdom. The meeting will be held
in Bournemouth, which is on the south coast of England approximate 160 km
(100 miles) south west of London. There is a local airport and direct
train link from London. The conference will be in the Bournemouth
International Centre, which is one of the major conference centres in the UK and
has all the comprehensive facilities one would expect, including a swimming pool

Bournemouth is a major tourist resort and therefore has a wide range of hotels
to suit all pockets, all within easy walking distance of the conference centre.
A centralized booking facility will make it simple to make reservations.
Scientific Programme
The theme of the meeting will be 'Getting FES into Clinical Practice' as such
there will be close cooperation with medical and paramedical scientific
societies such as the British and European Societies of Rehabilitation Medicine.
It is planned that the first day of the meeting will be an overview of the
current clinically available FES systems with new developments being presented
later in the programme. It is also planned to organize practical workshops
either before or after the main meeting for anyone requiring formal practical
training in clinical FES techniques.
Social Programme
Central Southern England is an attractive area sand includes a number of
internationally famous sites, such as Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge and the
Dorset Heritage Coast famous for its fossils. As well as a civic reception
and the Conference dinner there will be an excursion arranged during the
conference programme.

Application
19.Sept. - 22. Sept. 2007

On behalf of the Physical Therapy Association of Taiwan and Delsys,
Inc., I am pleased to inform you that Professor Carlo J. De Luca, Director
of the NeuroMuscular Research Center at Boston University, will offer a FREE
workshop, “A Practicum on the Use of Surface EMG Signals”. The workshop will
be held during the XXI st Congress of International Society of
Biomechanics on July 4th, from 3:45 - 5:45 PM
(please note new time for the seminar), Room #101 CD, Grand Hyatt
Taipei.
The
workshop is intended to provide an introduction to conceptual and practical
knowledge required for detecting and using the Surface Electromyography (sEMG)
signal in the field of Movement Science. It is directed at practitioners
who need assistance in improving their use of the sEMG signal. No formal
knowledge of sEMG is required. Concepts and issues will be presented with
diagrams, pictures and real data.
Emphasis will be placed on the type of sensor to use and where to locate it
within the confines of the muscle surface. The characteristics such as:
electrode dimensions, dry vs. electrolyte interface, gel vs. dry electrode
will be discussed. Issues that are particular to sEMG signal detection, such
as sources of noise and cross-talk will be addressed.
The
workshop will discuss and provide recommendations to the following question:
-
What
information can be reliably obtained from the sEMG signal with relation
to force, muscle activation, and fatigue?
-
What are
the limitations of the use of the surface EMG signal?
-
What is
required to collect high-fidelity sEMG signals?
-
Why is
it sometimes difficult to detect a high-fidelity EMG signal?
-
How to
reduce the noise in the signal?
-
How to
reduce cross-talk?
-
Where
to locate the sensor and why?
4. New applications
for monitoring movement activities in Stroke and Parkinson’s patients
Seating is limited to 200 and the deadline to register is June 20, 2007.
