UK and Ireland Chapter

UKIR Chapter

1st IFESS chapter: UK and Ireland

A big step forward for IFESS was the founding of the first National IFESS chapter. The Chapter represents the UK and the Republic of Ireland (UKRI) and has the specific objectives to not only support FES research, but to translate research into clinical practice and develop stronger collaboration between engineers, clinicians and especially neuroscientists. The Chapter was launched at the INS meeting in Cardiff UK in Nov 2008 and the following people have now been elected to the Board of Directors:

President: Dr Paul Taylor

Secretary: Christine Singleton

Treasurer: Prof Ken Hunt.

The following people were elected as Ordinary Board members:

Prof Nick Donaldson
Prof Jane Burridge
Dr Lawrence Kenny
Dr Anand Pandyan.

The first meeting of the UKRI Chapter will be in Birmingham on 20th March 2009 in conjunction with the FES User group meeting.

Call for Papers:

We are delighted to announce the call for papers to the 2nd Annual Conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (UK and Ireland Chapter) to be hosted by University College Dublin on March 10-11th, 2011. The objective of this conference is to provide a forum for researchers and clinicians to discuss and develop the area of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). The inaugural conference hosted by the University of Salford earlier this year bringing together a range of those involved in the area. Presentations will include international experts in the field as well as oral and poster presentations. Topics covered will include the use of NMES/FES in neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory, sports performance and rehabilitation. Papers are now been accepted with guidelines for submission, an abstract template as well as information on Dublin and the conference venue available on our website www.ifessuki.com.

The organising committee of the 2nd Annual International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society UK and Ireland Chapter wish to announce an extension of the abstract submission date by two weeks to Wednesday, December 22nd owing to recent closures of many institutions with the current weather situation. The conference will be hosted in University College Dublin on the 10-11th March, 2011. Further information is available on our conference website www.ifessuki.com.

We are also delighted to announce that the keynote speakers who will be presenting at the conference are as follows:
